VTT in Finland has taken a significant step forward in the field of printed electronics by launching the Printocent Pilot Factory, a pilot line dedicated to high volume production. This new facility is specifically designed to cater to the production of wearable sensors and other flexible electronics, bridging the gap between laboratory research and large-scale manufacturing.

The Printocent Pilot Factory features state-of-the-art roll-to-roll processes that enable efficient production of wearable sensors and patches. The facility boasts interchangeable printing methods, high curing capacity, and automated layer-to-layer registration. From thin films measuring less than 100 nm to thick films in the tens of micrometers range, the pilot factory offers a versatile platform for producing a wide range of electronic components.

Moreover, the pilot lines at Printocent also include component assembly capabilities in a roll-to-roll format. This includes a high throughput pick and place line for low-temperature soldering or adhesive bonding, as well as a flip-chip high-precision and bare-die assembly line. These assembly processes are crucial for ensuring the seamless integration of electronic components into wearable devices.

Additionally, the facility is equipped with a lamination and cutting converting line that features cutting-edge technologies such as cutting lasers, robot arms, soldering, and ultrasonic welding capabilities. These tools support the post-processing and assembly of wearable sensors, while an injection molding machine with a roll feeder enables the overmolding of electronics, enhancing the durability and functionality of the devices.

To ensure the quality and functionality of the printed electronics produced at the facility, a dedicated test line is available for automated functionality testing and programming purposes. This testing phase is essential for identifying any potential issues or defects in the devices before they are released for further production or commercial use.
