The Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult has recently made a significant move by signing a deal with SMD Semiconductor in Sarawak, Malaysia. This partnership aims to bring SMD Semiconductor to the UK for the development of cutting-edge automotive and space power devices. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two entities sets the stage for collaboration in the design, prototyping, and manufacturing of next-generation semiconductor and compound semiconductor chips specifically tailored for the automotive and space industries.

Moreover, the MoU signifies SMD Semiconductor's intention to establish a presence in the UK for product development and foster collaboration with academia, industry, and government entities in both the UK and Sarawak. SMD Semiconductor, a wholly owned entity of the Sarawak Government, was founded in September 2022 under the Sarawak Research and Development Council Ordinance, 2017. The company focuses on advanced technological research and development, with a strong emphasis on chip design and the development of integrated circuit products.

"We're thrilled to formalize this partnership with SMD Semiconductor through the signing of the MoU, marking the beginning of a collaboration that will open up new avenues for the advancement of technology in critical sectors like automotive and space," expressed Martin McHugh, CEO at CSA Catapult. This partnership is expected to leverage the strengths of both organizations in semiconductor design, prototyping, and manufacturing to drive innovation and bring new concepts and products to life.

McHugh further emphasized the significance of the MoU for both the UK and Sarawak, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in strengthening supply chains and fostering cooperation between nations. By joining forces with close partners, the UK aims to enhance resilience and promote technological advancements that benefit multiple industries.

On the other hand, Shariman Jamil, CEO at SMD Semiconductor, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "By harnessing the unique properties of compound semiconductors, we aim to unlock new frontiers in performance, efficiency, and functionality across a wide range of applications." Jamil expressed SMD Semiconductor's commitment to investing in compound semiconductor technology to drive innovation, spur growth, and deliver long-term value to customers and stakeholders.
