Volkswagen’s battery company PowerCo has recently announced a significant deal with QuantumScape to industrialize next-generation solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. This partnership involves PowerCo obtaining a license to mass produce solid-state battery cells from QuantumScape, marking a major development in the field of battery technology.
The agreement supersedes a previous joint venture between Volkswagen Group and QuantumScape, which aimed to co-manufacture batteries through a pilot line established in 2021. As part of the deal, Frank Blome, a VW director on the QuantumScape board, has stepped down, with the announcement of his successor expected in the near future.
The non-exclusive deal between PowerCo and QuantumScape includes plans for the production of 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year initially, with the potential to expand to 80 GWh annually. This capacity would be sufficient to supply approximately one million vehicles each year, underscoring the challenges faced by QuantumScape in scaling up solid-state battery production for automotive applications.
QuantumScape’s technology platform is centered around its proprietary solid-state ceramic separator, which enables the utilization of a pure lithium-metal anode. This design offers higher power densities, rapid charging capabilities, and enhanced safety features, making it an attractive option for electric vehicle manufacturers.
“With this collaboration, we are committed to delivering the most sustainable and advanced battery cells to our customers,” stated Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo. “Having tested QuantumScape prototype cells for an extended period, we are excited to transition this cutting-edge technology into series production. By leveraging PowerCo’s expertise and resources, we aim to facilitate the industrial-scale production of QuantumScape’s innovative technology.”
Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group Board Member for Technology, expressed his optimism about the agreement, emphasizing the long-term benefits it will bring to the global fleet of Volkswagen vehicles. Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and president of QuantumScape, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal in advancing the commercialization and adoption of solid-state lithium-metal battery technology.
