5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services are experiencing significant growth, according to a recent study by Ericsson. Out of the 310 Communications Service Providers (CSPs) sampled globally, 241 were offering FWA services as of April 2024. What's even more noteworthy is that 53 percent of these providers included a 5G FWA offering, marking a 12-point increase from the previous year.
The appeal of 5G FWA lies in its speed, data handling capabilities, and low latency, which make speed-based FWA tariff plans more attractive to CSPs. These plans offer downlink and uplink data parameters similar to traditional cable or fiber offerings, driving a nearly 50 percent growth in the number of service providers offering 5G FWA speed-based tariffs in the past year.
Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, emphasized the strong uptake of 5G subscriptions in the June 2024 Ericsson Mobility Report. He highlighted that Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access are leading use cases for 5G, with indications that 5G capabilities are influencing service providers' FWA offerings. Jejdling also stressed the importance of deploying 5G Standalone technology to fully unlock the potential of 5G.
Currently, around 300 CSPs globally provide 5G services, with approximately 50 of them having launched 5G Standalone (5G SA) networks. The growth of 5G subscriptions is evident across all regions, with 160 million new subscriptions added in the first quarter of 2024, bringing the total to over 1.7 billion. It is projected that nearly 600 million additional subscriptions will be recorded by the end of 2024.
Looking ahead, researchers estimate that by the end of 2029, there will be close to 5.6 billion 5G subscriptions worldwide. Global 5G population coverage outside mainland China is expected to double from 40 percent in 2023 to 80 percent in 2029. By the end of the same year, 5G is anticipated to represent about 60 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
