In a groundbreaking project funded by the Rijkswaterstaat Corporate Innovation Programme, partners are embarking on specific research to address the necessary innovations of 5G technology at sea and the challenges associated with it. This initiative aims to explore how 5G can revolutionize connectivity in the maritime environment.

One of the key challenges being investigated is the increasing demand for data connectivity in the North Sea to support public tasks. Ensuring security and sovereignty in this region is crucial, especially with the rapid growth of economic activities taking place. The partners are focused on finding solutions that can meet these complex requirements.

The Coast Guard's 'North Sea Broadband' project, conducted between 2017 and 2018, laid the foundation for understanding the potential of broadband connectivity at sea in the coming years. This study not only identified broadband solutions for the maritime sector but also assessed the Coast Guard's current and future digital connectivity needs.

Building on the success of the initial project, a follow-up study has been initiated to involve other government organizations operating in the North Sea. With the expansion of government activities and the ambitious plans for offshore wind energy areas, there is a growing need for enhanced digital connectivity solutions to support various operations.

To facilitate the testing of new technological applications, Rijkswaterstaat has established the Connectivity Fieldlab North Sea (CFNS) at the Offshore Expertise Centre in Stellendam. The CFNS serves as a collaborative platform where government entities, industry stakeholders, and knowledge institutions can come together to enhance digital connectivity solutions in the North Sea region.
