STMicroelectronics and Geely Auto have recently announced a significant long-term supply agreement for Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices, solidifying their partnership in the automotive industry. This collaboration includes the establishment of a joint development lab in China, showcasing their commitment to innovation and technological advancement.
Under the agreement, ST will supply multiple Geely Auto brands with SiC power devices specifically designed for mid-to-high-end battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Geely Auto, known as China's top automotive brand, has been making strides in the market, selling 1.68 million vehicles in 2023. Notably, their new energy vehicles under the Zeekr and Lynk & Co brands have seen success, with 480,000 units sold. Geely's international brands, including Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, further demonstrate their global presence.
The joint development lab will serve as a platform for the exchange of information and exploration of automotive Electronics/Electrical (E/E) architectures. This includes areas such as in-vehicle infotainment, smart cockpit systems, advanced driver assistance (ADAS), and electric powertrains and battery systems. By collaborating in these key areas, both companies aim to drive innovation and enhance the driving experience for consumers.
Geely Auto has already integrated ST's third-generation SiC MOSFET devices into its electric traction inverters, showcasing the practical application of this partnership. Additionally, ST is in the process of establishing a joint venture 200mm SiC fab in Chongqing, China, in collaboration with Sanan Optoelectronics. This strategic move will enable the local supply of SiC devices starting from the end of 2025, further strengthening their presence in the market.
Henry Cao, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the China Region at STMicroelectronics, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Geely Auto's role as a pioneer in automotive innovation in China. He emphasized the importance of the SiC supply agreement and the joint lab establishment as significant milestones in their ongoing collaboration, positioning both companies for continued success in the evolving automotive landscape.
