Swiss positioning module maker u-blox has emerged as a key player in the realm of robot lawnmowers (RLMs), securing multiple significant projects that are set to reshape the industry. Collaborating with a majority of RLM manufacturers, u-blox is integrating its cutting-edge GNSS positioning modules into these autonomous machines, anticipating a revenue surge exceeding $100 million.

The pivotal role of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology with centimeter-level accuracy cannot be overstated in the context of RLM operations. Unlike traditional robotic lawnmowers that rely on buried boundary wires to delineate mowing areas, which are cumbersome to install and maintain, u-blox's GNSS modules offer a more efficient and precise alternative.

The evolution of GNSS technology, particularly the advent of real-time kinematic (RTK) GNSS systems capable of delivering unparalleled accuracy, has revolutionized the performance of RLMs in a sustainable manner. By eliminating the need for boundary wires, ensuring systematic mowing without overlap, and enhancing aesthetic appeal through precise navigation, these advancements are driving operational efficiency and cost savings.

The robotic lawnmower market is currently witnessing a surge in demand, with projections indicating a substantial growth trajectory. According to a recent ABI report, the market is poised to reach 2.6 million units by 2024, with an estimated annual growth rate of approximately 18.5% in the coming years.

u-blox envisions a future where high-precision GNSS technology penetrates 33% of the robotic lawnmower market by the end of the decade, aligning with the evolving needs of various sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure monitoring, smart cities, and the broader Internet of Things (IoT) landscape.

“The attainment of centimeter-level accuracy in GNSS opens up a myriad of possibilities for integrating this technology across diverse markets. We anticipate a widespread adoption of high-precision positioning technology in a range of products. Leveraging u-blox's technological expertise, we are committed to collaborating with our partners to drive innovation,” remarked Stephan Zizala, CEO of u-blox.
