Siemens has achieved a significant milestone with the successful delivery of a 1MW charge using its prototype Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for the first time. The Siemens SICHARGE Megawatt Charging System, which is part of a pilot project at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, features a customized MCS dispenser designed specifically for charging electric trucks.

The MCS comprises multiple SICHARGE UC150 power cabinets, a switching matrix, and a customized MCS dispenser. The switching matrix plays a crucial role in the MCS by consolidating the output power of the charging stations and directing the power to the MCS dispenser as needed. This setup allows batteries commonly found in electric trucks to be charged from 20 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes at a compatible charging station with an output of around one megawatt.

Markus Mildner, CEO eMobility at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of fast MCS for electric trucks and coaches, particularly during legally mandated driving time breaks in long-distance transport. Mildner highlighted the necessity of meeting various requirements, including governmental regulations, to ensure the widespread adoption of fast charging infrastructure. The successful test of the MCS represents a significant technological advancement and underscores Siemens' commitment to promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

Heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from road transport in the EU, accounting for over 25% of such emissions. Addressing these emissions is critical to the EU's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. By 2040, CO₂ emissions from large trucks and buses will need to be slashed by 90%, with new urban buses required to reduce emissions by 90% by 2030 and transition to zero-emission vehicles by 2035.
